On a chilly February evening, a couple passing through the Florida Everglades in Broward County spotted a disturbing sight: a frail dog moaning in the darkness, curled up on the filthy ground. The dog was visibly distressed, dirty, and seemed to have lost all hope, avoiding eye contact and appearing incredibly weak.
This unfortunate soul had been starving for days and seemed close to giving up on life. Realizing the urgency of the situation, the couple attempted to seek help, but despite their efforts, assistance was slow to arrive.
Officers With Big Hearts On Duty
After four hours of continuous calls, help finally arrived in the form of Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies, responding to what they classified as an “extreme case of abuse.” One compassionate officer immediately tended to the dog, offering food and water to sustain him for the journey ahead.
Though the dog was too weak to move on his own, the deputies managed to carefully transport him to their vehicle. Their dedication and resolve truly showcased the honor of their profession.

Upon stabilizing the dog, whom they named Powder, the deputies reached out to Dezzy’s Second Chance Animal Rescue. Sandra Dezelen, the founder, was quick to respond. She took Powder in for emergency medical care, noting his prolonged exposure to harsh conditions and anticipating a lengthy recovery.
Powder’s initial medical assessments revealed a severe infection that had left his skin inflamed. Moreover, he required immediate surgery for Entropia, diagnosed by Dr. Rob Schneider, a local eye specialist.
New Life That Truly Healed Him
Despite his traumatic experiences, Powder’s story turned toward recovery and hope under the care of Dezzy’s Second Chance. His skin healed, and successful eye surgeries restored his vision. Gaining weight and rediscovering his playful spirit, Powder found joy and trust in life thanks to the nurturing environment at the rescue.
Sandra confirmed through a comment on the “Lost Pet Found Pet” Facebook page that Powder had been adopted and was thriving in a loving home, a testament to the resilience of abused animals and the transformative power of compassion and care.
