Abandoned Puppy Rescued Near Wamego Highway Finds a New Home
In a heartwarming turn of events, a young abandoned puppy was recently discovered along a highway near Wamego and has since found a loving home.
On Saturday, while driving toward Manhattan, employees from Coleman Electric spotted a puppy stranded on a double-decker car carrier. Matt McMillan and Steve McLean acted quickly, flagging down the truck with the help of the drivers. Together, they successfully stopped the vehicle and rescued the young dog.
After bringing the puppy to safety, McMillan cared for her at their job site. The four-month-old retriever-lab mix, whom they named Karmel, quickly charmed her rescuers.
A Gentle Spirit Needing Comfort
“She’s the sweetest puppy,” McMillan shared. “Since we found her, she’s stayed right by our feet. She must’ve been exhausted because she spent the first couple of days sleeping, just trying to catch up and regain her strength.”
In light of recent tragedies, such as the increase in Crime Stoppers’ cash rewards for information on a body found in west Wichita, Karmel’s rescue offered a much-needed moment of hope. Having lost one of his own dogs recently, McMillan felt a special connection with Karmel and knew he couldn’t let her go.
A New Start and a Happy Ending
On Tuesday, McMillan took Karmel to have her microchip checked. When the original owners were contacted, they responded that they did not want her back, which opened the door for McMillan to officially make Karmel part of his family. Originally, Karmel had been adopted from a shelter in Manhattan, but fate intervened to place her with a new, loving owner.
