Hurricane Milton Destroys Business, But Tiny Kitten Saved From Rubble Helps Heal Their Hearts

As the world knows, two devastating hurricanes recently tore through the South, leaving a trail of destruction, particularly in Florida. First came Hurricane Helene on September 26th, 2024, which ravaged Florida and continued up to North Carolina, where many are still rebuilding. Just as recovery began, Hurricane Milton set its sights on the Tampa area, a region that hadn’t experienced a direct hurricane hit since 1921. The intensity of Milton was palpable, with residents, businesses, and animals bracing for impact.

For those of us at CaM Fam, living right in the path of the storm, it was a terrifying experience. We faced hours under an Extreme Wind Warning, enduring winds equivalent to an F1 tornado. Yet, amid the devastation that followed Hurricane Milton, small miracles emerged, offering hope during the storm’s aftermath.

Heartbreak and Hope Amidst the Rubble

After the hurricane, news reporters swarmed the state to document the damage and find glimmers of positivity. Among them was Ryan Bass, a local Bally sports reporter, who witnessed the wreckage firsthand. As he made his way through the hardest-hit areas in Clearwater and St. Petersburg, he encountered destroyed homes, businesses, and the heartbreaking sight of families sorting through piles of debris. The damage was overwhelming, with businesses that had withstood decades of Florida weather now flooded and broken.

But in the midst of this heartache, a small miracle unfolded. While filming the wreckage of a local business just a few blocks from Tampa Bay, Ryan stumbled upon an unexpected surprise.

A Kitten Among the Rubble

As Ryan surveyed the piles of debris, a tiny tortoiseshell kitten appeared amidst the chaos. Despite the devastation around her, the kitten began purring non-stop, as if offering comfort in the most unexpected of places.

“We found this kitty in the rubble here in Tampa’s Palmetto Beach neighborhood. He’s purring non-stop. We named him Milton, fittingly. Somebody please adopt this sweet boy,” Ryan shared.

Thankfully, Ryan was able to scoop up the friendly kitten before she disappeared back into the ruins. Though initially misgendered as male, it was later confirmed that this little tortie was, in fact, a female—tortoiseshell cats are almost always female.

A New Family, A New Beginning

The real miracle came when the owners of the very business that was destroyed by the storm, Pilgrim Permocoat Inc., decided to take in the stray kitten. Their business had been operating in that location for decades, and despite their loss, they found comfort in caring for the tiny survivor.

Perhaps the kitten had sensed their kindness from before, as Florida’s year-round warm weather brings continuous “kitten seasons” with thousands of strays roaming the streets. It’s likely that this little tortie, now affectionately called Milly, had been living nearby before the storm hit.

In an update, Ryan shared the heartwarming news:

“An update on the kitty who I nicknamed #Milton after finding it in the rubble. The family who owns the business behind me that was decimated by the storm is keeping Milton safe and just fed her. She’s super sweet. They’re keeping her safe!”

A Final, Heartwarming Update

The story of Milly continued to unfold as the family grew increasingly attached to their new furry friend. In what felt like the perfect ending to a story born from such destruction, Ryan shared the final, joyful update:

“A final, heartwarming update on Milton, the kitty cat we found in the hurricane debris: The owners of Pilgrim Permocoat Inc., who’ve been in business there since 1956, have decided to keep her! ‘We are already attached to Milton and think we are going to keep her. She’s just so darn sweet!’”

Finding Joy After the Storm

In the wake of Hurricane Milton, as businesses and families rebuild from the rubble, stories like Milly’s remind us that hope and healing can emerge from even the darkest moments. For the family who took her in, Milly has become a beacon of light, helping to mend their hearts after their loss.

Congrats to Milly and her new family! This little kitten’s story shows that even after a storm, there can be a rainbow. 🌈
