A rare condition did not stop a little kitten from finding the loving family she had always dreamed of.

The Unlikely Discovery of Appa

Elise Hall, a veterinarian from Illinois, discovered a unique kitten named Appa on an animal support page for those with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a genetic condition that causes fragile, easily damaged skin.

“We joined the group because of our beloved cat Porg, who also had Ehlers Danlos,” Elise shared with Love Meow. Although Porg passed away last year, his memory inspired Elise and her partner to support other pet owners caring for animals with EDS. It wasn’t long before they found Appa, a Selkirk Rex kitten with the same rare condition, and immediately fell in love.

A Bond Beyond Words

Elise’s bond with Appa was instant, similar to the connection she shared with Porg. Confident that they could provide her with the necessary medical care and love, Elise and her partner welcomed Appa into their family. When they first brought her home, Appa, with her unique charm, quickly found her place in their hearts.

Overcoming Challenges Together

When Appa arrived, she faced a few health challenges, including ringworm and a heart murmur. Without delay, Elise began her treatment, determined to help the little kitten recover. At only three months old, Appa had already lost much of her fluffy fur, save for a few patches on her back. To protect her healing skin, Elise fashioned a small scarf for her, adding a touch of cuteness while keeping her comfortable.

Elise carefully managed Appa’s care, regularly trimming her nails and occasionally dressing her in a protective outfit to avoid further injuries. Unlike Porg, Appa has a milder form of EDS, but her skin remains delicate and stretchy due to the genetic disorder affecting her connective tissues.

A Fluffy Transformation

She also enjoys teasing her canine sibling, Mowgli, frolicking in the yard, and indulging in foot massages and belly rubs whenever she’s in the mood for affection.
