A Rare Natural Phenomenon: The Gushing Water Tree, 150 Years Old

The small village of Dinoša in Montenegro is home to an ancient mulberry tree that transforms into a spectacular water fountain every time it experiences heavy rainfall.

The Science Behind the Gushing Water
While it’s uncommon for water to surge from living trees, this extraordinary phenomenon has a logical explanation. The meadow where the mulberry tree stands is rich with underground springs that flood during intense rainfalls. The increased pressure from the flooding forces water up through the hollow trunk of the tree and out through a hole situated a few feet above the ground.

“This has been happening for the last 20 to 25 years, perhaps even longer,” local resident Emir Hakramaj shared with Radio Free Europe. “This tree is 100 years old, maybe even 150. A cavity formed in the middle, and an underground spring has broken through to the crown, resulting in this stunning spectacle.”

Comparative Natural Wonders
A similar occurrence can be observed in the Estonian town of Tuhala, where water flows from an old well known as the Witch’s Well. However, while the locals in Tuhala attribute the phenomenon to a legend of witches clashing with birch branches and creating disturbances on the surface, the residents of Dinoša simply regard it as a rare and fascinating natural occurrence.
